Health is wealth,is a hugely popular saying, being healthy and fit is what we all strive for as individuals in our daily lives.
So when Covid put the world on pause,it was hard to imagine what life would be like in the nearest future.
Every industry, sector, governments, countries felt the impact of the pandemic.
So many people had to rely on family and friends to maintain their sanity due to the mental strain from isolation and quarantine, many had to pick up a skill, baking, playing the flute or even becoming social media sensations.
Mental health was not the only area of health that suffered though, the gyms were closed and stress eating and alcohol abuse meant that people piled on weight that they din't need and dint know how to get rid of quickly.
The pandemic indeed gave rise to people suffering from anxiety, weightrelated issues than an actual Covid diagnosis.
People faced uncertain economic conditions and many people replaced exercise routines with habits that never helped.
The New York Times Cites a global study that confirms that during the pandemic, many of us ate more junk food, exercised less, were more anxious and got way less sleep.
A Subject from the study shared that during the lockdowns, when he was stuck at home, his anxiety levels went up!
He stopped exercising and started stress eating. Gone were the diets and calorie counting with people opting for foods that were more comforting.
We were feeding the soul more than feeding the stomach,” He said
“We were making sure to eat things that made us feel better not just nutritional items.”
Another global survey conducted also revealed that the Covid- 19 pandemic, quarantine, lockdowns give rise to dramatic changes in health behaviors, prompting people around the world to cut back on physical activity and eat more junk foods.
It drove anxiety levels higher and disrupted sleep. And those who were obese, who already faced increased health risks, may have fared the worst the researchers found.
While people enjoyed more family bonding experiences and improvements in some aspects of their diets, such as cooking at home more and eating out less, they were also the most likely to report struggling with their weight and mental health.
The findings, published in the journal Obesity, offer a cautionary lesson for many of us as the world begins to open back up,vaccines now available, travel and tourism now picking up,Indeed now might be a good time to assess and take stock of the healthy habits and routines we may have let slip during the Lockdowns and find ways to circle back towards a good health and fitness regime.
