Yea I know! I am a bit late to the party! But some of us like to wait and then binge watch the whole series and thats exactly what happened with power. Now am done with both seasons and can now state my views.
But Wait! Why dint y'all tell me about power since?! Hands up I am an empire fan BUT Power is the ish just one episode and am wondering why power inst as popular as empire yes they are very similar and forget that beef with executive producer Curtis Jackson AKA 50 cent and some other casts of empire but what is surprising is how empire is much more popular than power.
Social media stats on twitter alone shows 114k followers for Power with close to 700k for empire
So why is empire much more popular than power if i think power is better??
Well here are 6 reasons why we are loving power over empire
1)There is a solid story!
I am not saying empire doesnt have a story but really it all got watered down in season two, with the same ol same ol,Luscious being brutal as usual,Cookie being her normal self,Hakeem still being his usual spoilt brat rapper chasing girls and all.
Jamal is always the star for me simply because I love the music! and every season Jamal played by Jussie Smollet always has great music for the show.
He's a total musician who also plays instruments,so i give Kudos to Jamal,Andre was totally irrelevant this season as a matter of fact He could have been left out and I wouldn't have noticed
Empire relied on its season 1 hype and totally went to sleep on its second season Power on the other hand progressed in its second season with the characters gaining more momentum telling the stories of drug dealing, love, betrayal,Family, manipulation and everyday security issues all rolled into one seamlessly .
The Major character of Ghost being so elusive in season one and still being able to manipulate his way throughout season two giving off a clean vibe yet being behind a major city's drug business seems like a genius plot which the writers exploited for a blazing second season.
Empire and Power draw similarities with both series having niteclubs Laviticus and Truth respectively and of course music intertwined but on this occasion power wins with a more engaging story and plot.
2)The Nigerian connection
Yep! When you hear a Rotimi Akinosho no body needs to ask where he's from and When American -Nigerian Artist and actor Rotimi joined the show as Dre we had more love for power,in any way its putting our name on the map and we gotta Famz eh? lol..
Rotimi is presently signed to 50 cent's G unit and is presently enjoying airplay with his new hit track Lotto featuring Power executive producer 5o Cent!
3)Power did well with the white black character switch
The two major Characters of the show are Tommy and Ghost(James saint Patrick) Played by Joseph Sikora and Omari Hardwick respectively, addresses the usual stereotype in most US shows where most times its the white guy who is the bad one and the black guy often takes a fall for it.
Its all switched around in Power where the black guy is the one who is portrayed as prim and proper while the white guy does all the "street" dealings. It just goes to show you can be good or bad no matter the colour of your skin.
The friendship between the two characters is totally cool to watch.Tommy and Ghost embody what you call Ride or die! even a line from the show when 50 Cent's Character Knaan tried to describe them read "They are tight like a pair of balls cant get one without the other" You dont say 50!
4)50 Cent's in it!
Well I love 50 Cent, I think he totally doesnt take himself seriously, even though I dint lie is character Knaan alot on this show, just him being in power gives it that plus for me..
There are loads and loads of celebrities in Empire who dint even add anything to the show. For example Chris Rock came on this season(2) and his role could have been played by anybody else..Impact wasnt really felt..
5)We are giving the casting for POWER an A!
Considering the Power cast had even virtually new cast,Omari Hardwick (Main Character Ghost) isnt so so popular ohh well i had seem him in a few shows like being Maryjane and others but cant compare to the status of Empire's top man Luscious yet he held his own.Others like Leila Loren,Joseph Sikora Naturi Naughton,Luis Anthonio Ramos,JR Ramirez,Andy Bean,Jerry Ferrara,Enrique Murciano and others sure did good in their roles.
They were simply round pegs in round holes,I mean you had Real Latin actors playing Drug lords and what not yes it might seem like trying to peg them but it is what it is and the character of Lobos played by Enrique Murciano totally mirrors the recent El Chapo debacle so yes Power is deffo doing something great realistically.
6)Power made us want to learn Spanish!
Ohhh have you heard a black man speak Spanish? The Character of Ghost played by Omari Hardwick speaking Spanish got me all like hmmm so sexy! cmon boy say that again?! Lol.. Power sure did well with the infusion of Spanish. The reality of the world's drug dealers probably converse in Spanish as typical of their region but all the same we aint looking at the negatives here.
Definitely puts Spanish on the map as one of the top languages in the world After English,French and maybe Portuguese of course!
So we loved power for the Drama, music, action,Character play an other things in between but there's one very big but for me though. The SEX! The Character Ghost meets his lost love after 13 years, they rekindle their fire yea there's gonna be some explosive action but the sex scenes became too many well for me! I mean before we can say Jack Robinson Bra don lost!Somebody don off Pant lol..Haba y'all chill small lol..
That was the only BUT for me with power as I sure would have still watched without all them sex scenes, there is enough drama to keep it engaging, they dint need all that sex..
So as I wait for season 3 of both shows here's hoping Power keeps the momentum or even ups the Ante! and Empire should come back big! I want Drama,Drama,Drama! ,I mean I love Empire for the music Timbaland as executive producer for music sure wasnt a mistake! and the cast of course Taraji P Henson,Terrrence Howard and the rest but for now POWER has stolen me away!
Nice review.
