Yikes! Where can I even start from?? Haven Left Nigeria at some point for studies abroad I never missed Nigerian TV because I made sure I was catching up with my Nigerian shows online.
I was always online looking for sites streaming Nigerian local content I found a couple and they sure kept me company.I could watch shows like Gulder Ultimate search,Mtn Projectfame,Nigerian Idol and the likes. I was enjoying my dose of Nigerian content online Vis a vis My favorite British shows.
Fastforward to me heading back home to Naija me still missing my British shows because down here the internet situation is totally different I mean Internet services are expensive! and not unlimited so I couldn't catch up with my dose of British Telly.
So I had Only Local Nigerian Television ermmm yes no money for DSTV you can like to sow a seed lol.. So from Station to station there is either one Mexican or Brazilian series or the other showing at one point or the other. Dont get me wrong this did not just start ohhh I remember while in Uni then and we all will rush to the hostel to watch a particular mexican soap(When you are mine) comprising prominent characters Diego and paloma hmmmm as in this series ran for like 4 years never ending and corporate bodies were all supporting with sponsorship and the series just kept on going and going..even a nail bar on my street rebranded and named her salon "Paloma"! for real!
We did not just start this telenovella Madness I mean an average Nigerian youth has been through more telenovellas than an average Latino,One ends and the next is being brought on ASAP!
On Galaxy Television alone I counted about 4 telenovellas Abyss of passion,Two faces,Maid in Manhattan, face of destiny and more..ehen dont ask me how I know their names I sure dont watch them! yeah right!
AIT also has its fair share with " My Mother's daughter and some other ones,TV Continental went all Asian with an Indian series Kareena -Kareena and ONTV also going Asian with Pavita Rhista(Divine Relationship) which I researched and realized it had aired more than 5 years back on the ZEE Network
Whats my grouse you my ask hen..My point is
-Why are there so many on Nigerian Local TV?
-Why do we have to depend on foreign Dramas with Dodgy voice overs?
-Why should our TV stations depend on outdated soaps to fill their airtime?
-Are our dramas not gripping enough or adequate enough to entertain us?
-Are our own drama series also appreciated in such countries and also supported by their corporate bodies?
-Is the NBC aware that these soaps that are outdated in their country of origin are gradually filling our airwaves and edging out authentic Nigerian Drama?
-Arent there any regulations to limit them to at least maybe 2 at a time for every TV station?
-Is the Nigerian Child still going to enjoy some authentic Nigerian Drama in 5 years time?
Question questions questions..
Yes I admit these soaps grip you with some lovely story lines that our own soaps may not be able to sustain yes i said I dont watch them! lol but our own is our own we should invest in more writers, encouraging people to read more, research more, and write more gripping dramas and series. I mean I stumbled on a US series "Criminal minds" I watched just one episode and the next day was a Saturday I looked for the episodes and dint get out of bed until I was done with about 3 seasons! I was engrossed,it got my heart racing, got my mind working, got my head thinking, stimulated my brain, made my reasoning peak up!
Our Writers should be able to deliver stories that will enthrall us,and make us not be able to wait till next week for the next episode! our corporate bodies should encourage producers with the support and sponsorship to churn our world class quality content so that we will be able to choose our own soaps over all these Telenovelas!
